The 48th reunion dinner of HMS Barham Survivors Association was held at 6pm on Saturday 15th May 2004 at the Royal Sailors Home Club in Portsmouth. Of 53 Guests, 6 Survivors attended. Newcomers included David Mason and his wife, Evelyn from Sidmouth. Also Cmdr Maurice Whitehouse who normally comes to the service at the Abbey. His father was the Engineer who died in the sinking. The Dinner was also attended by Lord Barham, Lady Gainsborough and Lady Rosemary Griffin. The Committee were voted in for next year. A letter from HM the Queen was read out by Michael Stratton Brown in acknowledgement of the Associations Greetings to her. Tony Cutting, son of Derek, bought along a photo album which he had bought at an auction in Notts. It containted photos of the first world war of HMS Barham and Associated items . This naval seaman joined Barham in 1915 and obviously remained in the ship until after the end of WW1 because there is a card "Souvenirs of the Great War 1914 - 1918". William Sunderland AB joined August 1915 spent the rest of the war there and there about 40 postcard size photos of life on the ship, including rowing regattas, boxing matches and obstacle courses. |
