The 45th reunion dinner of HMS Barham Survivors Association was held at 6pm on Saturday 19th May 2001 at the Royal Sailors Home Club in Portsmouth. Some photos can be found here. Of 60 Guests, 11 Survivors attended. They were
They received a round of applause when it was made known 11 survivors were present. Mr Michael Stratton Brown, secretary of the Association, gave a speech telling us that 54 Survivors are regularly written to as well as 3 previous members of the ship's company. 68 families of those who were killed are written to. He also announced recent deaths of members of the Association including Mrs Anne Wood who laid the wreath during the service of rememberance on 25th November at Westminster Abbey last year. Sadly Mrs Wood died this February. An auction was held of a picture of Barham which rasied £100. Mr George Elliott appealed for a new Chairman of the Association but no one volunteered. A raffle was held, and a spectacularly large ensign of the type displayed on a Battleship was unfurled(and occupied most of one wall of the room!) to a round of applause. It was supplied by Paul Marson of Queensland whos father, Walter Jeffreys Marson was Chaplain on the Barham from 1938 to 1940. A list was circulated to each table that had survivors giving the names of people which visitors to the guestbook on this site hope may jog memories. Sadly none were jogged last night but Mr Stratton Brown has agreed to send out the list to families with the September Newsletter. |
