|Charlie joined the Navy at 19 and served for 17 years before, during and after WW2.
During this time he spent several years on HMS Barham and was fortunate enough to survive the sinking in November 1941.
He died in 1999 aged 84 and is survived by his wife Isa.
According to his nephew James, after the sinking his family were told he was missing and they did not hear from him for about 2 years. He ended up in South Africa for some reason after being picked up by one of the accompanying destroyers.
He was a very good football player and played semi professional football on leaving the navy and returning to Scotland.
