James John Udall Greenland |
James John Udall Greenland was part of the original crew, joining as a Chief Petty Officer on 19 August 1915, before the ship was officially commissioned.
He continued to serve with Barham right through to 14 August 1918 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for services rendered in the action in the North Sea 31 May - 1 June 1916, the Battle of Jutland.
He joined the navy as a Boy in 1891, training at HMS Boscawen. I think he was a gunnery instructor/specialist, having spent considerable time at HMS Excellent/Whale Island at Portsmouth. |
