| Herbert married Gladys and they had a family of 7 children, 2 boys and 5 girls. Sadly in 1957 their 5th child Stephen died at the age of 9. Herbert worked for BRS Transport as a long distance lorry driver. In the mid 1950\'s Herbert suffered a back injury whilst changing a wheel. An injury that prevented him from driving a large vehicle again, so he took up the position as transport clerk for BRS. He later became the Branch Transport Manager. Shortly after the death of his son Stephen, Herbert became ill and it was diagnosed that he had a brain tumour, the prognosis being that he would not survive 3 months. Herbert through sheer grit and determination eventually became well enough to return to work, and lived another 6 years before the cancer finally took hold. His widow Gladys is now 88 years old. The family has grown vastly since Herbert died and to date (2009) there are 6 children, 13 grand children and 22 great-grandchildren. Herbery only saw 4 grandchildren before he died, but he would have been so proud of the family now. |
