My great Grandad and Grandad both survivied the sinking of the Barham. My Great Grandad went on to serve on many other ships and then on teh Queen Mary as Cox until he retired. He died aged 99 in Portsmouth. My Grandad unfortunately diaed reasonably young from Leukaemia in Gosport in 1973. (Charlie Bishop). He never got to retire.I was only 3 when he passed. I check this site regularly as I feel I grew up with stories of teh Brham and my Great Grandads efforts to save other Crew. I also have a photo of my Grandad in Alexandria on the beach on leave not long before the ship was sunk. |

My Dad always remembered his Ship. He built a Model of Her and had all the gaff about Her on his wall in his Den. He past in 2000 in Cape Town South Africa. When the Barham sank he was first listed as missing and my Gran received the dreaded Telegram but then he was found to have survived. |

An update to my earlier post on my uncle Owen I found some details on him , service number 69089. Served under name of R.K. Jevon And also is down as being South african . Which makes me wonder why he gave the false name ,maybe about his age or because the army connection . The mystery thickens

My uncle ownie ran off and enlisted into the royal scots greys ,lied about his age and in due course returned from Dunkirk with just his over coat and trousers no boots , all his older brothers were all serving in the Royal Navy at the time and my mother said this is what made his mind up to enlist under a false name and join his brothers in the navy ,unfortunately this proved to be a tragic descision on his part , it was his first ship the Barham and his first trip out ,his job lam told was in the magazine which l was told one of the torpedos struck my auntie Cath deceased now told me that she had spoken to some of the survivors and they said he would have known any thing once the ammunitions were hit, my auntie cath also said his name was on the memorial in Portsmouth his real name and the name he enlisted under , l shall have to go and pay my respects at Portsmouth soon .rest in peace uncle Ownie |
