I would like to know if it would be possible to take up his banner and in my own small way carry forward the memory of H.M.S BARHAM.My Gran received the dreaded Telegram saying that he was lost believed dead. Then, one that he had survived. |

I have a great photo of HMS Barham taken during a visit to Shetland. She is at Anchor in Lerwick harbour. You can see this by visiting the Shetland Museum website, and, I believe, order copies. I consider it an honour to own this, and have it on display in my surgery. I will never forget the huge debt we owe to these men, who gave all for our freedom. Naval historians may also find other photos of interest on the Shetland Museum site, eg HMS Rodney |

My best to the survivors and their families, and the families of those lost in HMS Barham. God Bless you all. The United States has not forgotten the valor of her greatest ally. |

Arthur Howe |
My Great Uncle was O/S Arthur Howe, youngest son of Ernest & Nellie Howe of Ryde IOW. Unfortunately, my Grandmother destroyed all photos of him in her latter years. My mother faintly remembers a young man in unifirom sitting with her under the table Morrison Shelter as she was only 5 when the Barnham went down. My Grandmother was understandibly very bitter. They received his letters telling of how he would be home for Christmas, on the same day that they received word that he was missing. 2 weeks later they were told he was presumed killed. His last letters, almost a voice from the grave continued to arrive into the new year. The family refused to attend the memorial services at Southsea as a way of protesting about the handling of the news. Years later, the use of the sinking scenes in TV programmes caused fresh pain to my Grandmother. A site such as this would, I think have helped her. Thank you. Frances Nash |

Charles William Taylor |
L/Stoker Charles William Taylor was my uncle. He survived to also serve on the HMS Ajax, and also on the HMS Rhododendron on the "Murmansk Run". I haven't seen him since 1949 when we emigrated to Canada, but my family always had fond memories of him. My mother, (of course), knew a lot more about his youthful antics than we ever found out. |

William Harrison |
I was so pleased to discover that there was so much about the Barham. My Uncle who I did not know was lost when the ship went down. I remeber my Mother , Bill's elder sister said that they received a letter to say that the Ship had been lost and that Bill had died. She said that her Mother had gone to her bedroom and cried for hours then not spoken about the loss after that. I assume now I know some of the history that was because they were told not to discuss the loss. I am so glad that the name of my Uncle still lives on because I had thought I was the only person alive to have any knowledge of him. And that the history of the Barham is so vividly recorded. My Uncle was called William(Bill) Harrison and I now discover he was a leading seaman from your web page. My Mother used to say that he was in the sick bay when the ship was sunk. At their last port he had been playing football and broken his ankle so was hospitalised when the ship went down. I seem to remeber that my Mother had said he had married a girl from Glasgow but I don't know when or if there were any children. Last year at the Remembrance Service at my little country church I had put a poppy in a cross that was put on the steps of the war memorial in his memory. It is a comfort that the knowledge of these men and their ship will live on. |
