What can I do to help in keeping the memory of the ship alive? I attended the memorial service in 1979 and was privileged to assist in laying the wreath. |

I am a graduate student at the University of New Orleans and an employee at the LSU Health Sciences Center in the same city. The LSU School of Medicine will celebrate its 75th Anniversary next year, and we are writing a book to commemorate the occasion. My research has turned my attention to the 64th General Hospital, which, as you might well know, operated in the Mediterranean theater of operations during 1943 and 1944. The Hospital was apparently attached to Fifth Army, and was stationed first in Tunisia, North Africa, and, later, at Maddaloni (Caserta) and Leghorn (Livorno), Italy, as the Fifth moved up the Italian peninsula. The 64th was made up of many members from Louisiana, several of whom studied or worked at the LSU Medical School. One of the memoirs on your website mentions the 64th, and I was wondering how many of your members might remember passing through or being treated at this hospital. Any information that you could give me would be really important to the project, and would, of course, carry all the recognition that scholarly practice mandates. |

My name is Geoff Read and my father Stanley Read was a Barham survivor.I feel pretty bad about the fact I have never looked at this site myself and that I did not inform the association of my father's death on October 14, 2004. He had made the trip to England from Australia with my late mother and myself for a function in 1986 with other Barham survivors and he wanted me to make sure that I kept up to date with what was happening with the association. My mother did all the letter writing and she kept contact with Ted Sibley, but I am not sure if he is still with us or not. It is good to see a website about Barham and now I can see what is going on. If I am ever in England again I will be sure to contact various members. I wish I was there this year as I am a cricket fanatic and the Ashes series looks like it could be a really interesting one. Looks like it will be all night vigils in front of the TV for that. All the best to all folk involved with Barham. Thanks, Geoff Read |

Charles B Hockaday |
Hi, My names Maria Fiore Great -Grandaughter of Charles BHockaday who lost his life on the ship. He was a teacher and was only in his 40's. I remember coming to the memorial about 8-9 years ago. My Great Grandmother Berta Grace Hockaday, wife to Charles came too. Unfortunately she died November 5th 2003 aged 102....what an achievement. Since Gradma Grace died we have lost the contact of HMS Barhman and reunions etc. I do not know much about my Great Grandfather but only knew he was a lovely lovely man, and deicded to teach even though he knew the risks on the ship. I will have to ask my Gran for a picture of him, he was a very handsome man. He wrote stories and letters almost like a diary on the ship and sent them to my Grandma Grace, very interesting, still intact. Please e-mail me i would love to hear from someone in the organisation. Maybe this is my way of trying to find out more about my family and the history. Thanks Regards Maria Fiore |

Salvatore Anastasi |
My father (Salvatore Anastasi) was a survivor of the Barham. Sadly he is no longer with us, having past away from a serious illness back in 1996. I recall many times when my father would recall the events that happened on that fateful day his mates that sadly perished. He often felt guilty having survied, and struggled with why he was spared. Obviously I am grateful as are my seven siblings. I wish to send my warmest regards and sympathy to all who had to bear the pain of loss on behalf of my father and all of his. |
