I have always had in my possession a photgrapg of a signalmen in summer rig from hms Barham who I always believe was my father Leslie Palmer, After nearly a lifetime I have found a long lost sister,Ruth Palmer and now realize that the man in the photo is not my father. How can I identify who he could be..... Jim Palmer Hoyes |

My name is dave Powell and I live at wall Heath in the West Midlands. My mother -in-law lost her brother Jack Clarence Harris - Chief Petty Officer Stoker on the Barham. About 5 years ago, I was asked to give a chap a lift to a bowls club near me. His name is Fred Bratton who was a survivor. What an incredible co-incidence! Due to ill health, he has now moved to Southwell, Notts to be near his daughter. He was one of the nine to attend the last re-union at Pompey. |

As a mid age man I have often seen the footage of the Barham being lost. It never fails to impact me. Great ships are made great by their men, H.M.S Barham was a great ship. Rest in Peace, you great men of the great ships of the great days.
(one of your Photos labeled as \"probably Barham\" is likey Queen Elizbeth or maybe the Valiant-but certainly not the Barham!) |

I am concerned about this person who sent this letter into a diver magazine.
I am researching the sinking of HMS Duchess in the Irish Sea in 1939. Has the wreck been located and dived? I have no record of the Duchess being dived, but DIVER Tommy Cecil of Rathlin Island is said to have found the wreck. Three months after war was declared in September 1939, the 1375-ton destroyer Duchess and the 31,000-ton dreadnought-battleship Barham collided in fog on 12 December, 1939 in the North Channel, four miles north-east of Altacarry Head Lighthouse on Rathlin. The 326ft Duchess came off worse against the 643ft Barham. Her captain, Lt-Commander RC White, and five officers and 123 ratings were lost. Only one officer and 22 ratings were picked up after the destroyer sank. The Barham was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on 25 November, 1941, and sank in five minutes with a loss of 56 officers, 658 ratings and 134 marines. Only 300 of her crew were saved.
This is the email I received from Mr Jones. My Great uncle went down with the Duchess and I think that this war grave should not be disturbed.
I found your email address on a website forum and wonder if any of you can tell me about HMS Duchess and the people on board her. i ask this as i am gathering information to write a book on this forgotten tragedy. i currently posess one photo and a list of those who died. if anyone can be of help then i would be most grateful. i would very much like to dive the wreck too as a final chapter and bring this story to light. many thanks Rich Jones
