Arthur Bryant |
Arthur Bryant my late uncle who died aged 18 on HMS Barham, joined the navy at 16. He applied to join the navy and as he was only 16 required the signature of my grandfather. He refused but my uncle would not let the matter rest so in the end my Grandfather agreed to sign his papers if he managed to dig over a large patch of ground in one day. Knowing how much joining the navy meant to her son my grandmother helped him to clear the ground and dig it over. When my grandfather returned home at the end of the day he saw the completed job and duly signed the papers. After his death my grandparents never spoke of the way he came to join the navy. My mother remembers walking with her brother as he left home for the last time, he walked with her as she went to school, she turned left to wards East Pennard and waved to each other untill out of site he carried on the six miles to Castle cary Station and back to his ship. |

I recently found this site with the grave marker of the crew of HMS Barham who died at Jutland. "Erected by their shipmates"

W. Stokes |
According to my Nan her dad (my great grandad), William Stokes served aboard HMS Barham. I have an old photo of the ship with the date 1922 written on the back. I cannot find his name on the list that this website has. I was wondering if anyone had information proving he seved on Barham, I would be most grateful. Jonathan Gwynne |
