It is sad to relate that Phil John Turner, cameraman who filmed the demise of HMS Barham, died March 7 2007. His obituary appears in The Times Online today and an obituary appeared in the Guardian on 24th March 2007. |

My uncle Harold Smith went down with the Barham. He went in the Navy as a boy and was killed aged just 18. I know its a long shot but does anyone remember him and even more a long shot does anyone have a photo? |

Sidney Collins, deceased |
I found your excellent website on the internet & the information on it is most interesting. My connection with HMS Barham is a table! My mother\'s first marriage was to Sidney Collins, a carpenter, who served on HMS Barham & was lost at sea when she sank in 1941. I remember my mother telling me that he was told to modify the wardroom table and his CO suggested that he should make a small table from the offcut for his new home in Gosport as they had recently married. I live in Ireland now and that piece of Barham is still a useful table and it is also a link with naval history. Whenever we are in UK a visit to Portsmouth is a \'must\' and I would like to join the Association. My husband has built a scale model of HMS Widgeon (a Kingfisher class corvette) and now I am trying to persuade him to build one of HMS Barham. |

I don't think I'll be signing the Helen Duncan petition. She made a delicate situation worse. An easy trick to pull off in Portsmouth. A good site for those interested in all history is Google's News archive. http://news.google.com/archivesearch?hl=en Use the advanced search. There are Time magazine reports of Dakar and although most American newspapers observed the news blackout until the 27th January 1942 some smaller ones reported on the 13th January that Berlin radio had broadcast a report (recorded by United Press) that the Barham had been sunk the previous year. |

Just wondering if anyone else caught the Channel 4 News last night ? There was a piece on Helen Duncan and a campaign by her relatives on the Downing Street web site for her to recieve a pardon for her conviction for witchcraft . She was imprisoned and sentenced for stating she had a 'vision' that the Barham had sunk prior to the official release of the news . They also showed the clip of the sinking and summarised the events of 25th November 1941 . The petition is via the below email address and closes on the 22nd April . Mr. Samuels was my divisional Officer at HMS Ganges in 1956 and was an inspiration to an unruly bunch of boys. If he should see this or you can inform him that I still have a penny that he hit twice with a .22 rifle whilst on the range. |
