William \"Will\" Howitt |
My Uncle Will was a survivor of HMS Barham, where he served either as C.P.O. or P.O. Guns, taking after his Father who was Fleet Chief Guns in 1916 at Jutland, ( William George Howitt ) After the sinking, my Uncle could never be out in the rain without panicking, and would rush indoors, such was the trauma he suffered. The poor man went to bed for an afternoon siesta, and died in his sleep of a heart attack. He was a lovely, very clever man as I recall, dearly loved by all of his own family, and by his sisters. |

Well this was my uncle albert. Being born in 1959 I never met him. My father Raymond was his younger brother. Albert was born and raised in Stockton-on-Tees and was one of 10 children of whom 6 including Albert survived into adulthood. |

George Lemon |
My Grandfather, George Lemon sadly lost his life on the Barham. He was Chief Electrical Artificer and was associated with the engine room. I would love to hear from any relative of other crew members or serving RN at the time that have any information regarding my Grandfather. |

Harry Webley |
While sorting out my parents effects I found my father\'s birth certificate. His father, Henry (Harry) Webley is listed as a shipwright on HMS Barham in 1919. I now work for the RN as a civil servant. I would be interested to know any other information about the ship around this date. |

I came across your website while searching for interesting sites about lost ships that have been found. Its all so very moving and I marvel at the resilience of the survivors and of the families of the ships company that died that fateful day. |

When my brothers and I asked my father to tell us war stories, he told us of the sinking of the Barham. He was Marine Bob Watts on the Valiant. He was thrown against the bulkhead by the force of the explosion, and he said, that normally the Valiant took the lead ships position. What fate in this sad loss of so many brave servicemen, that saved our father, allowing all five of us to be born? Sadly my father passed away when he was only 68 yrs old,he would have shuddered at the memory of seeing this video of the sinking, and more to the point, seeing the actual german captain who sent the fan of death with the 4 torpedoes towards the Barham. I am 57yrs old, and my fathers stories still are very much a strong reminder of the sacrifice they all made, and I have made certain that my 4 children all know the story well. I give thanks to their bravery, that we might taste the sweetness of freedom, and our families do not live in the very real police state that Hitler would have made for Britain. |
