I would be interested to hear from anyone related to, or who served with George Wells. He was my mothers only sibling (half brother, her name: Patricia Rutledge (nee Wells), formerly of East Walthamstowe, now living in New Zealand. |

My son and me have just read the page as we bear the ships name. We are looking through some old photos of my dads and he has his army hat on at a tilt. It reminded me of when I was in the navy and an officer started to chastise me for wearing my hat crooked, until I told him my name. He then let me of as all HMS Barham crew did this. He never explained further. Can anyone clear up this mystery for me. Many thanks and keep up the good work with the site. Geoff and Matthew Barham. |

Hi all, I am currently making up a memento of the life of the late Jim McIntosh for his son, a friend of mine.
Jim joined the navy as a boy in 1929 and served on Emperor of India, Nelson, Queen Elizabeth, Malaya and other ships before joining HMS Calcutta at the outbreak of war in 1939.
Jim was 95 when he died this year but when in his 80\'s and very much on the ball he dictated a synopsis of his navy career as boy seaman, OS, AB and Ldg Seaman and told in some detail of his being sunk with Calcutta then taken to Alexandria before going via Ismalia by train to Port Tewfick where he joined Barham for the voyage to Durban.
Jim said he went through the King Neptune Fantasia on Barham on 18 July when opposite Mombassa. He has a certificate for crossing the line for that date but it is made out for the Empress of Australia.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
There are at least two possibilities as I see it.
1/ Jim did cross the line twice once on his way to Durban from Egypt on Barham and once on his way home from Durban to UK on Empress of Australia and the cert is for the UK bound crossing, and not as he recalled the southbound crossing.
2/ Jim did the above journeys but got his certificate on the way to Durban which was in the name of Empress of Australia because there were no certs available on Barham and they got some from the troopship.
To complicate matters further another Barham website has a photograph of the Captain going through the Crossing the Line ceremony in June 1941.
It all depends on the dates that Barham sailed to Durban after suffering damage at Crete?
Jim got a Distinguished Service Medal from King George VI for his actions as Coxwain of the ships motorboat evacuating NZ & Australian troops around Athens.
He also joined HMS Exmoor after returning to the UK and took part in actions with Walker RN including the U-131 sinking.
Hope you can help me with this anomaly.
Regards, Tom Minogue, Dunfermline.
