My great grandfather - James John Udall Greenland - ON161574- was among the Barham\'s first crew, joining in August 1915 before the ship was officially commissioned. He served at the Battle of Jutland, and was awarded the DSM \'for services rendered in the action in the North Sea 31 May - 1 June\'. He continued to serve with Barham until 14 August 1918. He joined the navy as a Boy in 1891. Thank you for this tremendous website. |

My wife has just acquired the Service Certificate of her late grandfather William George Mara. He served in HMS Barham as an Able Seaman from 14th December 1917 until 30th September 1920. He joined up on the 3rd December 1913 as a Boy 2nd Class and was released on 10th July 1955 as a CPO of 12 years standing. William was born on 11th January 1896 in Lambeth, London and died 15th January 1974 in Portsmouth. His original Official Number was L28793 but this later changed to P/JX 147861. |

Just to say a fascinating site. My granddad Albert, was a Gunner on board at the time of the sinking. I can remember him telling me, apart from how lucky he was, about sliding down the side of the ship scraping skin off on the way and of taking in much oil when in the water, after finally being blown back to the surface after being sucked down into the water by the ship. He attended many of the memorials in London and spoke fondly of crew and friends from that Ship. I am now 50 and thank God never have had to take part in any conflict. Thanks very much to brave people Like Albert and his crew mates. |

Fred Parkin |
It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of Fred Parkin aged 89 years of age. Fred served on HMS Barham as a stoker prior to its sinking. He told many tales of his time in the Royal Navy. He only recently received his Service Medals, they were looked at but never removed from the cellopahne wrappers. He will be sorely missed. There are some unofficial photographs of HMS Barham if you would like copies. Philip Corcoran (Nephew) |

My father told me about the sinking of HMS Barham at the age of 8. I am now 58, and it was only last year that I searched for the footage of the Barham. Untill then, I never knew that such a film existed.I am one of 5 children, and many grandchildren, who would not have seen life, if the Valiant had been hit. My father told us children, that the Valiant normally took the lead, but on that fatfull day, the Barham was in the lead. I look at the film footage on a regular basis, and have shown my four children, and they have shown their children, of the sacrifice that was made in both wars. God rest their young souls, my father has long gone, but his stories still linger, along with my uncles treatment that he recieved at the hands of the Japs, when he was on the Prince of Wales, and he eventually died on the Burma railway! |

I have just updated file on the above named crew member. I came across his name on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. He is not sadly the person I am looking for but have posted his details to help anyone in the future who is looking for information. I hope this was allowed and that I have not broken confidentiality rules. I have also found details of my great-uncle John(Jackie) Adams of Gateshead who also died on the Barham. This website was my starting point so thank you all so much. |
