James Philp |
James Philp was my father\'s brother and died before I was born. James\' mother (my grandmother) never had any closure on her bereavement because his body was never found. I remember Granny saying that she hoped that James was still alive on a desert island somewhere. I said \"Granny, there are no desert islands in the Mediterranean!\" \"I know, dear.\" was her wistful reply. |

What an amazing job you are all doing keeping HMS Barham and all what it means to so many of us having lost family many years ago. I have an interesting story that happened last year. My wife was sorting through a box of documents my Uncle Ernest Ireton had written from HMS Barham. One letter was written by Arthur Andrews in early 1942 to Ernest Ireton’s cousin in Middlesborough after the HMS Barham sinking.
The letter ……... Dear Madam, I received your letter this morning and to inform you that I knew your cousin by sight but not to speak to and to tell you that he would be midship when it happened and he would have no chance. You asked me what part of the ship he was in when he was in South Africa well the Marines were split up and he would be quarter deck man – there was only 20 marines saved out of 160 and I am very sorry he was not one of them. Signed Arthur Andrews
My wife checked the Barham website and realized that Arthur Andrews was one of the survivors of HMS Barham. Thanks to your website my wife was able to make a connection and locate family member’s of the Andrew’s family and decided that this letter may be a piece of history that should be returned to the Andrews family so they could see their grandfather / great grandfather’s hand-writing as well as the kindness he showed.
It took only a few emails and Arthur’s grandsons responded with great excitement to find a piece of history of their grandfather. It was very encouraging and rewarding for my wife and I to know the original letter has gone back to its family after 70 YEARS and to know how grateful the Andrews family are.

I was told by my father that my grandfather was the Chief petty Officer on HMS Barham at the battle of Jutland and was also the Fleet CPO at this battle. Regretably he died when my father was young so I never met him. Have a photo of him though. |

My grandfather Gordon Newell served on the hms Barham and had survived the sinking. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago and is truly missed. I will never forget the stories he told and the pictures he showed me when he became a boxer on board.

thoughtful, touching and engaging testamony to the brave men of HMS Barham and their families. I was lucky enough to see service in the RN as an AB in peacetime, so I can only imagine how awful it must have been for all concerned. Thankyou for your sacrifice. RIP. |

I served in the U.S. Army during Jimma\' Carter\'s term, so it didn\'t really count. My son is a Bubble Head in the U.S. Navy today. Thank God there was a time when our Nations stood up to tyranny, and didn\'t follow political correctness. The Sailors on the HMS Barham did not die in vain. They fought for the Principles and Eternal Truths our countries used to follow. Thanks for posting this site. |
