He presented the association of the Barham with there Standard back on the 50th reunion of the sinking of the Barham . He was so very proud to have been a crew member of the Barham but never really spoke much of his time served on her before that fatefull day . Dear HMS Barham Association,
I am currently working on a book on the 2,549 men and women from Portsmouth who were killed during the Second World War. 54 of them were serving on HMS Barham, and I am very keen to find out more about them. I am researching many of them locally - street directories, electoral rolls, local newspapers etc - and also obtaining their service records from the National Archives. If anybody has any information about any Portsmouth men on the Barham I would be very glad to hear from you. Or if I might be able to help with anything please get in touch!
Thank you for your time,
James Daly |

Walter Hook (Wally) |
Elsie Loft, my wife, sister of Wally Hook. Wally\'s three Sisters, Claire, Joan and Elsie are still alive, but Wally Hook and his brother Ernest are deceased. Wally Hook hardly ever spoke about his war time experiences but he did attend the annual dinners on board a boat docked on the Thames. Some of his remaining relatives believe he served on the Russion runs during the depth of winter. We do not know which ship he served on. We also recall that he could not swim but was saved by a fellow sailor who grabbed his hair. We would like to explore his naval service ie ships he served on and incidents etc. Wally lived most of his life in Bermondsey.
Can anybody help us please. Thank you. |
