Geoffrey Boydell |
Geoffrey Boydell was my grandmas brother. He served on HMS Barham and lost his life at just 17. My grandma talked about Geoff to my sister and I when she was alive and discussed the events when the family learnt of his death and had to keep this a secreat. My mum still has the letters that Geoff wrote to my grandma whilst serving on HMS Barham. Its so sad that so many lost their lives but I feel very proud that I have a family member that sacrificed his life for us whilst serving on HMS Barham, and have found it fascinating discovering the history of this ship. |

Many thanks to the 114 or so people who attended the wreath laying service at Westminster Abbey today on a very cold London Afternoon. It was marvellous to see so many people and to meet a new \'Survivor\' who only recently contacted or became aware of the association. He was a Mr David Stewart and it was his first time attending the service with his family. He was photographed with Jack Nealon and other survivors, alongside Bob Woodgate who paraded the Standard during the service. He told us how he was 15 at the time of the skinking and managed to scramble onto the side of the ship, that had not listed into the sea and while doing so, the explosion blew him off the boat into the sea. He said he was picked up by an Australian destroyer - (Nizam). Other people many of whome we had not seen before were at the service, and promised to send photos etc of relatives. One group, also first timers, had come specially from Dublin for the event. A full report with names and photos will follow in due course. I was very happy to be given permission by Westminster Abbey press office to film the entire service on my camcorder, and will be investigating ways to edit this and make it avaialable on the internet, again in due course. If anyone who attended the service but did not get a chance to make themseves known or wanted to send any photos etc, please do email me at whitelodge@clara.co.uk. During the service, the Secretary, Ray Oliver, made an announcement after the service about the forthcoming service of Dedication for the HMS Barham Memorial stone at the National Arboretum at Alrewas Staffordshire to be held on June 11th, 2011. All are welcome to attend but an idea of numbers would be appreciated. |
