I have been researching my family history and have some documents with regards to my step father who was a sailor from 1936 untill 1947 i am just listing this as to how lucky he was as a salor aboard the HMS BARHAM he joined the ship in august 1941 and left the ship on the 7th nov 1941 before it was tragically sunk. to go to HMS CANOPUS on the 8th of nov 1941 then on to HMS PEMBROKE then on to HMS PEMBROKE then to HMS COPRA then HMS PEBROKE then hms SHARPSHOOTER he was finaly discharged may 1947 as permanatly unfit what cause i dont know ,i do remember the years from the early 50s i have his medals and some info and still looking for more. he served also on the HMS RAMILES and the HMS SHEFIELD he went through terrible stress but would not talk about the war but did tell my mother some about friends gone and things she could not understand, he when i think back was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder as it is called today he was a boy orphan when he joined HMS GANGES in 1936 he passed away quite a number of years ago. |

My uncle was serving on HMS Duchess when the collision happened. I have been looking into the events of that day. Would be great to know if any other crew members families have any details. Names of friends etc. |

L/s William Lamb, my father's eldest brother was on Barham at Jutland. His brother Alfred was on Neptune in the same conflict. William was killed in an accident in 1918 whilst on Barham. Family anecdote has it ,that he had charge of a party lifting an aircraft on a hoist when ashackle broke and it fell.He is supposed to have pushed other men to safety in the incident. Commonwealth war graves simply list him as 'drowned' His brother Alfred accompanied his body when it was taken home for burial in Nottingham General Cemetary in a war grave site there. In reading about Barham I have never seen reference to aircraft but I suppose the plane could have been from another ship or anywhere. Is anything known please? |
