George Ivan Harris "I have lived in Canada for over 30 years but I do return to the UK at least twice a year. My Dad, Marine George Ivan Harris, went down with the Barham. I was 2 years old at the time. My mother remarried 6 months later and there was no further contact with my fathers family. I spent time a few years ago trying to trace them but was not successful. On a recent visit to London my wife and I went to Westminster Abbey. We found the Barham book with my fathers name inscribed. For me it was a stunning discovery, I had no previous knowledge of its existence. A kindly guide showed us the candlesticks and told us about the annual memorial service. Later on it seemed probable that my business as a publisher would take me to London in November. My wife, Jane, went on the internet to find out the date of the service and as a result discovered the Barham site. I will never forget opening the photographs of the deceased and seeing my fathers picture. I checked with my mothers family and as they had not sent it in I assumed that it came from my fathers side. I contacted the webmaster, Sara Wrigley, told her my story and some time later she found and sent me an e-mail address. After 60 years I am now in touch with my Dads family and I am corresponding with the cousin who sent in the photo. It is very exciting, thanks to the power of the internet and the determination of Sara." Nick Harris |
